Making 18th-Century Sailor Trousers with Lu Firth
Making 18th-Century Sailor Trousers with Lu Firth
Led by historical dress specialist Lu Firth, this two-day workshop invites you to make your own pair of sailor trousers using techniques inspired by 18th-century maritime clothing.
Drawing on the lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, the workshop explores cross-dressing, survival at sea, and piracy as a form of working-class queer resistance.
Across two days, you will learn how to construct a pair of high-waisted, sailor trousers. You’ll be invited to incorporate hidden details and symbolic additions, such as stitched messages or secret pockets.
